International Students at the 'Y' Club (1943)

A newspaper article photograph with caption from the Springfield Union newspaper titled "Foreign students to be guests of 'Y' Club" and thought to have been published in March of 1943. The article depicts the foreign students of Springfield College (back then known as International YCMA College) who were guests at a YMCA’s club meeting. Pictured are Dr. Ernest Best, Dr. Hugo Thompson (faculty adviser), Juan Pascoe (Mexico), Ricardo Paredes (El Salvador), Fred Hoshiyama (California) Maximo Garcia (Uruguay), Hsian Hsia (China), Ian Keen (South Africa), and Henry Koizuma (Hawaii).Fred Y. Hoshiyama lived his entire life in association with the YMCA. In 1942, he was interred at the Government Internment Camp in Utah, where he helped to create YMCA-based programs to help address the social, educational, and recreational needs of the Japanese-Americans held in the camp. An offer to study at Springfield College provided Hoshiyama with an early release from the camp. In 1971, he was appointed associate staff of the national program and Urban Development Division. He developed National Youth Program Using Mini-Bikes (NYPUM), a program that eventually engaged 250,000 high-risk youth in productive activities. Henry Koizumi, class of 1944 of Springfield College, was attending a Junior College in California when concentration for all Japanese at the western seaboard was ordered by the US government. As part of a special program offered by Colleges and Universities across the US, including Springfield College, Mr. Koizumi enrolled to Springfield College where he graduated in 1944. Mr. Koizumi was an active alumni for all of his life. Mr. Koizumi passed away in April 4, 1991
