Elmer Berry, class of 1902

This photograph depicts what is believed to be the 2nd Dean Academy, as a penciled caption on the back states. Most of the men in the photo are unidentified, but for Elmer Berry who stands far left in the picture. It is not sure where the photograph was taken or what the 2nd Dean Academy was at this time. Mr. Berry, class of 1902 of the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, came originally from the University of Nebraska. Elmer Berry graduated from Springfield College in 1902 and was an instructor in anatomy, gymnastics, and athletics before receiving a MPE degree there in 1908. Later, he was a professor of physical education and physiology at the college. He received EdM and EdD degrees at Harvard University and was the author of several articles on physical education. In 1927, he was called to the National YMCA, College of Physical Education in Saidapet, Madras, India, and served as acting principal for two years. He retired from the YMCA service in 1939 after thirty-four years of service. He was a physical education professor at the State College of Washington and the University of Oregon and was presented with the Tarbell Medallion in 1947 for services to Springfield College.A pencilled caption on the back of the photograph reads "2nd Dean Academy"
