Absence from work and disability represent a major social problem in Norway today. The first part of the working paper is a review of literature on work and health, taken mainly from Sweden from the 1980-1990-ies. The second part is an elaboration of a scheduled action research project on preventive health. The purpose is to explore the causes of illness arising in the work conditions and how to improve health and well-being. Further, based on this knowledge, point to strategies of changing the work conditions of employees. We argue that psychosomatic and physical diseases are closely related to work tasks and the organisation of the company as a whole.
