Heráldica en Melilla

ABOUT HERALDRY IN MELlLLA The dictionary of the Real Academia Española defines the word heraldry as the coat of arms art. The coat of arms is the art of explaining and describing the arm shields in each lineage, city or person. We have a huge representation of arm shields in Melilla that includes familiar, ecclesiastical and local heraldry. In different places of the fortified enclosure of Melilla La Vieja arm shields belonging to kings or governors can be observed. There are several ecclesiastical coat of arms in the church of the Purísima Concepción. We find a good example of local heraldry in the different official buildings of the Ciudad Autónoma. About familiar heraldry we have recently known the existence of the Melilla surname with its corresponding arm shields. We try to describe and to place the different heraldic representations existing in our city.DE HERÁLDICA EN MELILLA El diccionario de la Real Academia Española define la palabra heráldica como el arte del blasón, siendo blasón el arte de explicar y describir los escudos de armas de cada linaje, ciudad o persona. En Melilla tenemos una amplia representación de escudos de armas que engloba heráldica familiar, eclesiástica y municipal. Escudos de armas pertenecientes a reyes o gobernadores se pueden observar colocados en distintos lugares de los recintos fortificados de Melilla la Vieja. En la iglesia de la Purísima Concepción existen varios blasones eclesiásticos. Un buen ejemplo de heráldica municipal lo encontramos en los diferentes edificios oficiales de la Ciudad Autónoma y sobre heráldica familiar hemos conocido recientemente la existencia del apellido Melilla con su escudo de armas correspondiente. Pretendemos por tanto describir y situar las distintas representaciones heráldicas existentes en nuestra ciudad
