The Synthane pilot plant was operated by the Lummus Company for the US Department of Energy during the period 1975-1978 to test the feasibility of the Synthane process to produce pipeline quality gas from coal. The Synthane process was developed by the US Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pa., now the Pittsburgh Energy Technical Center. The operations of the Synthane pilot plant were suspended in September, 1978. The unit has been mothballed and is presently being maintained in a standby mode. The final report of the operation of the Synthane Pilot Plant represents a summary of various aspects of this project.
