Varied seed rate in cereals : the texture´s impact on harvest, crop development and quality variables

The development in Swedish agriculture is rapidly advancing and the use of precision cultivation is becoming more common. Making the right things at the right time and in the right place is something that is increasingly sought by farmers to improve the growth of the crop as well as to achieve the right quality of yield. The purpose of this work is to investigate how to vary the seed amount after the soil texture. This was carried out through a pilot project in oats where different seed quantities were seeded in test panes on a field of varied clay content. The experiment would show if there were any differences in plant numbers, development, or quality, and if those differences correlated to the variations in texture within the field. The hope was that the study would give answers to whether the amount of seed can be reduced on lighter soils without risking a lower yield or poorer quality of the end product. The work also included making a literary review of both Swedish and foreign literature related to varied seed quantities. The results of the experiment and the literature study showed that there is a certain basis for using the soil texture to vary the amount of seed. There was a difference between emergence and plant development on the different soil types. With a higher plant emergence on lighter soils and lower with higher clay content. There were also harvest qualities that differed between the different crops. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in yield between different seeding amount or different soil types. Based on the experiment, a specific seed amount could not be determined that is optimal for a certain texture in the soil. However, it is clear that there are differences between test sites and that these differences are likely to be derived from the texture. The idea was to compensate for poorer plant emergence on the clay soil, increasing the amount of seed, but the dry year meant that the clay soils had the advantage of being able to keep water better than the sand soils and that might have affected the result. Based on both the field trial and the literature study, it can be concluded that there is an advantage to vary the amount of seed after variation in texture. But the design of this variation must be determined by more studies and field trials.Utvecklingen inom svenskt lantbruk går snabbt framåt och utnyttjandet av precisionsodling blir allt vanligare. Att göra rätt insats vid rätt tidpunkt och på rätt plats är något som allt mer eftersträvas hos lantbrukare för att förbättra ekonomin i odlingen såväl som att nå rätt kvalité på avsalugrödor. Detta arbete har till syfte att undersöka hur man skall variera utsädesmängden efter texturen i marken. Detta genomfördes genom ett pilotprojekt i havre där olika utsädesmängder såddes i försökrutor på ett fält med varierad lerhalt. Försöket skulle visa om det fanns några skillnader i uppkomst, utveckling, skörd eller kvalitet och om den skillnaden gick att korrelera till variationerna i textur inom fältet. Förhoppningen var att genom undersökningen få svar på huruvida utsädesmängden kan minskas på lättare jordarna utan att riskera en lägre skörd eller sämre kvalitet på slutprodukten. Arbetet innefattade även att göra en litteraturgenomgång på såväl svensk som utländsk litteratur som berör varierad utsädesmängd. Resultatet från försöket och litteraturstudien visade på ett det finns ett visst underlag för att använda texturen i marken för att variera utsädesmängden. Det fanns en skillnad mellan uppkomst och plantutveckling på de olika jordarna. Med en högre plantuppkomst på lättare jordar och lägre på leriga partier. Det fanns även skördekvalitéter som skiljde sig mellan de olika utsädesmängderna. Däremot gick det inte att signifikant skilja skörd mellan olika utsädesmängder eller på olika jordarter. Utifrån försöket kan inte en specifik utsädesmängd bestämmas som är optimal för en viss textur i marken. Men det är tydligt att det finns skillnader mellan provplatserna och att dessa skillnader sannolikt kan härledas till texturen. Tanken var att kompensera sämre uppkomst på lerjorden med att öka utsädesmängden men det torra året gjorde att lerjordarna hade fördelen att kunna hålla vatten bättre än sandjordarna och att det kan ha påverkat resultatet. Med stöd av både försöket och litteraturen kan anses att det finns fördel att variera utsädesmängden efter variation i textur.
