A number of recent studies have postulated that end stage renal disease patients receiving hemodialysis as a treatment can serve as a unique model of non-thyroidal illness syndrome. In reverse, it has been suggested that disarrangements in thyroid function can have a prognostic impact in hemodialysis patient’s survival. Indeed, recent studies have proposed a possible link between freeT3 and inflammation in hemodialysis, while other investigators postulated a connection between low freeT3 and the cardiorenal syndrome.
