Study of capture reactions with relevance to the nucleosynthesis of medium-heavy nuclei

The study of charged particle capture reactions is of major importance for the understanding of the production of p nuclei and p process nucleosynthesis. The term ‘p nuclei’ refers to 35 stable nuclei, lying on the proton rich side of the valley of stability, from ⁷⁴Se to ¹⁹⁶Hg. All stellar nucleosynthesis models developed so far, fail to satisfactorily reproduce the p-nuclei abundances. In order to perform such abundance calculations one has to take into account the cross sections of more than 20000 nuclear reactions which involve almost 2000 nuclei. Obviously, such a huge amount of experimental data is not available, especially since the vast majority of the involved nuclei are unstable. As a consequence, the p-nuclei abundance calculations have to rely on the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach (HF) theory. In order to check the nuclear parameters that enter HF calculations, one has to compare the theoretical predictions with experimental cross sections in the energy region of interest. In this direction, the present work was focused on systematic cross section measurements of proton and α-particle capture reactions, in the medium heavy mass region, to be used for the optimization of the nuclear parameters of HF theory. More specifically, the present work involves cross section measurements of 11 (p, γ) reactions and 7 [a, γ) reactions, on various isotopes of the medium-heavy mass region. The cross section measurements were carried out using three different experimental techniques: 1. Activation. 2. γ ray angular distribution measurements. 3. γ ray angle integrated measurements. The most common method used for cross section measurements is the activation technique due to the fact that it offers accurate results with the use of a rather simple setup. The energy of the γ rays to be detected offline, is in most cases lower than 2.5 MeV. Hence, the use of a small size HPGe detector, of 20-30% relative efficiency, is enough for the detection of the relevant gamma rays. In addition, the γ spectra are collected off-line, thus, they are usually free of beam induced background. However, the irradiation of the target often results to high β activities and the intensity of the 511 keV γ line creates a high Compton background at low energies. As a result, the detection of low energy γ transitions is not an easy task, especially in the cases where the relevant cross sections are very low. An additional advantage of the activation method is the possibility of using natural (not enriched) targets. However, the applicability of the method is limited by the requirement that the produced nucleus has to be unstable and have a suitable half life. The latter constraint does not apply in the case of the other two methods, where the measurements are carried out in-beam. In principle, these methods can be applied in any reaction, however, the use of enriched targets is mandatory in order to minimize the beam induced background coming from “interfering” reactions. In-beam measurements can either involve the angular distributions of all relevant gamma rays, or their angle integration. In the first case, a detection setup consisting of high efficiency HPGe detectors, of almost 100% relative efficiency, is required, since the energy of the γ rays to be detected is usually higher than 8 MeV. In this method, the cross section is, in principle, determined from the angular distributions of all primary γ rays. However, their analysis is not always reliable since at high excitation energies the level scheme is usually not complete. Hence, in practice, the cross section is determined from the angular distributions of the γ rays feeding the ground state and not from those of the primary γ rays. The main disadvantages of this method are its long run time and its time consuming analysis procedure. The former one is due to the requirement for measurements at least at 5 different angles, while the latter one results from the number of relevant γ ray lines which in some cases are more than 20. On the other hand, the alternative in-beam method for cross section measurements involves the angle integration of the relevant γ rays. This method is based on the use of a large volume NaI(Tl) detector which combines the high efficiency γ ray detection with a 4π geometry. The working principle of such a detector relies on its large volume and its long time response. Due to the latter one, the sequential photons emitted in a γ cascade are detected as one, with energy equal to the sum of the energies of the involved photons. This results to the formation of a single peak in the γ spectra, the so called “sum peak”, which consists of events coming from the de-excitation of the produced nucleus from the entry state to the ground state, either through single photon emission or through different γ cascades. Consequently, the cross section of a capture reaction can be determined from the acquisition of only one spectrum and the analysis of a single peak (the sum peak) for each beam energy. All measurements of (p, γ) reactions were carried out with proton beams in the energy region from 2 to 7.2 MeV, while the (α, γ) reactions were measured at energies from 5.7 to 11.7 MeV. The cross section measurements, carried out with the three methods, were performed at three different laboratories: 1) the activation measurements were performed using the Van de-Graaf Tandem accelerator of “Demokritos” in Athens, Greece, 2) the angular distributions measurements were carried out at the Dynamitron accelerator of the IfS in Stuttgart, Germany, and 3) the angle integrated measurements were done at the Dynamitron Tandem accelerator of the University of Bochum, Germany. The targets used in all measurements were thin foils, with thicknesses between 30 and 1700 pg/cm². The thickness of each target was measured by means of the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) technique. The vast majority of the targets were highly enriched in the isotope of interest. Natural targets were used in the case of the activation measurements and also when applying the angular distributions technique on the isotopes of Sb and In, for which the natural target consists only of two isotopes, respectively. The energy loss of the proton beam in the targets varied from 1 to 50 keV, while for the α-particle beam the energy loss was between 70 and 350 keV. The targets were either self-supporting or were evaporated on thick Ta backings. The activation measurements took place in two steps: At first, the target was mounted in a scattering chamber, on an Al holder, and it was irradiated with high beam currents. During the irradiations the target was cooled with a specially designed water cooling system. The total accumulated charge on target was measured through a current integrator. However, in activation measurements one has to correct for the number of nuclei that decay during the irradiation period, and for this reason the beam fluctuations were monitored with a multiscaler unit. After the irradiation, the target was transferred in the off-line setup which consisted of a 55% relative efficiency HPGe detector that was placed inside a 5 cm thick Pb shielding. The efficiency of the detector was determined using a ¹⁵²Eu source of known activity. In addition, the change in the activity of the target was measured as a function of time, in order to confirm the half life of the produced nucleus. The cross sections of the studied reactions were derived from the measured activity after correcting for the efficiency of the detector, the γ-ray intensity and the beam fluxuations. The γ-ray angular distribution measurements were carried out using four HPGe detectors of 100% relative efficiency. The detectors were mounted on a rotating table in order to take measurements at 8 different angles with respect to the beam axis. Each detector was shielded with BGO crystals for Compton suppression. Additional measurements were performed at the same beam energies using a blank Ta backing, in order to investigate possible γ-ray lines coming from beam induced reactions with the backing material. For each reaction of interest, the γ rays observed in the spectra were properly assigned to γ transitions of the produced nucleus or to “contaminating” reactions. The absolute yield of all the γ transitions feeding the ground state of the produced nucleus was measured at all angles and all beam energies. The relevant γ angular distributions W(Θ), determined from these yields, were then fitted by Legendre polynomials. The “absolute” A₀ coefficients resulting from these fits were used to obtain the total cross sections σ(E). The experimental setup used for the angle integrated measurements consisted of a 12'' x 12"NaI(Tl) detector with a bore hole along its axis. The covered solid angle for a target placed at the center of the detector was almost 4π. The absolute summing efficiency of this detector was determined over a wide energy range, by measuring resonances of well known strengths and γ branchings. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations were performed using the code GEANT4. Since the summing efficiency of the 4 π detector was affected by the multiplicity of the involved cascades, a new method was developed for the determination of the average multiplicity of a reaction. This method is based on the comparison of the intensity of the sum peak measured for a target placed at the center of the detector, to the intensity measured for the same target placed at the edge of the detector. The ratio of these intensities depends on the multiplicity of the relevant cascade. Thus, by taking spectra at the center and at the edge of the detector, for each reaction and each beam energy, we could determine, the average multiplicity and the summing efficiency of the detector. The cross section of each reaction of interest was derived from the analysis of the corresponding sum peak simply by correcting for the summing efficiency, the total accumulated charge and the target thickness. The experimental results were compared to the predictions of HF theory. The theoretical calculations were performed using the code MOST [Go98] and they included different combinations of the following nuclear parameters: 1) the nuclear level densities (NLDs), 2) the nucleon-nucleus optical model potential (OMP), and 3) the a-particle-nucleus optical model potential (α-OMP). Each of the nuclear parameters was described using either a phenomenological or a microscopic approach. For the case of the NLDs, the phenomenological approach was the one of Thielemann-Arnould-Truran [Th86], while the microscopic model was the one of Demetriou and Goriely [DeOl], The nucleon-nucleus OMP was described either with the phenomenological approach of Koning and Delaroche [Ko03], with the microscopic model of Jeukenne-Lejeune-Mahaux [Je77b], or with the semi microscopic approach of Bauge-Delaroche-Girod [BaOl]. Finally, for the a-OMP the semi microscopic model of Demetriou-Grama-Goriely [De02] was used. The latter model used a microscopic description for the real part of the OMP and three different phenomenological approaches for the imaginary part. The comparison of the experimental data with the predictions of HF theory resulted to the following conclusions: 1. In the case of the (p, γ) reactions the most sensitive parameter was the nucleon- nucleus OMP, while for the (a, 7) reactions the a-OMP. 2. In both cases, at energies lower than the n-channel threshold, the NLDs do not affect the cross section calculations significantly. 3. In [p, γ) reactions, the discrepancies between the different theoretical calculations were at most of the order of 50%. These conclusions were in agreement with the rest of the (p, γ) reactions that were studied by the Nuclear Astrophysics group of “Demokritos”. This systematic study involves the cross section measurements of 22 (p, γ) reactions and 7 (α, γ) reactions (including the reactions studied in the present work) in the medium-heavy mass region. In addition, the above conclusions agree with other similar studies of capture reactions from the literature. Above all, one can conclude that the discrepancies of the p-nuclei abundance calculations cannot be attributed to the calculations of Hauser-Feshbach theory. The latter calculations can reproduce the experimental data within, at most, a factor of 2. Thus, this deviation is not able to justify the up to two orders of magnitude discrepancies in the abundance calculations.Η μελέτη των αντιδράσεων σύλληψης φορτισμένων σωματιδίων παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον στην κατανόηση και τη σωστή περιγραφή της πυρηνοσυνθετικής διεργασίας p, η οποία είναι υπεύθυνη για την παραγωγή των λεγάμενων p πυρήνων. Ο όρος ρ πυρήνες αναφέρεται σε 35 σταθερούς πυρήνες, οι οποίοι βρίσκονται στην πλούσια σε πρωτόνια περιοχή της κοιλάδας σταθερότητας, από το ⁷⁴Se μέχρι το ¹⁹⁶Hg. Τα αστροφυσικά πρότυπα πυρηνοσύνθεσης που έχουν αναπτυχθεί μέχρι σήμερα, αδυνατούν να αναπαράγουν σε ικανοποιητικό βαθμό τις περιεκτικότητες όλων των p πυρήνων. Για το λόγο αυτό, είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική η μελέτη των πυρηνικών αντιδράσεων που υπεισέρχονται σε υπολογισμούς περιεκτικοτήτων. Στην περίπτωση της διεργασίας p οι υπολογισμοί αυτοί περιλαμβάνουν περισσότερες από 20000 αντιδράσεις στις οποίες συμμετέχουν περίπου 2000 πυρήνες. Προφανώς, δεν είναι δυνατός ο πειραματικός προσδιορισμός των ενεργών διατομών όλων αυτών των αντιδράσεων, ιδιαίτερα αν λάβει κανείς υπόψη ότι οι πυρήνες που συμμετέχουν σε αυτό το δίκτυο πυρηνικών αντιδράσεων είναι στην πλειοψηφία τους ασταθείς. Έτσι, στην πραγματοποίηση αστροφυσικών υπολογισμών είναι απαραίτητη η χρήση της θεωρίας Hauser-Feshbach (HF) για το θεωρητικό προσδιορισμό των σχετικών ενεργών διατομών. Ο έλεγχος των πυρηνικών παραμέτρων που εισέρχονται στους θεωρητικούς υπολογισμούς της θεωρίας HF είναι δυνατός μέσω της σύγκρισης των θεωρητικών προβλέψεων με πειραματικές μετρήσεις ενεργών διατομών. Η παρούσα εργασία περιλαμβάνει τη συστηματική μελέτη αντιδράσεων σύλληψης πρωτονίων και σωματιδίων α στην περιοχή των μεσοβαρών πυρήνων με σκοπό τη βελτιστοποίηση των μοντέλων περιγραφής των πυρηνικών ιδιοτήτων που εισέρχονται στη θεωρία HF. Η διατριβή αυτή αποτελείται από 5 κεφάλαια : α) θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο, β) μεθοδολογία και πειραματικές διατάζεις, γ) μετρήσεις και ανάλυση, δ) θεωρητικοί υπολογισμού και αποτελέσματα και ε) τελικά συμπεράσματα. Στο θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο αναπτύσσονται αρχικά κάποιες έννοιες που σχετίζονται με τις αστρικές διεργασίες. Συγκεκριμένα, αφού αναφέρονται σε συντομία οι έννοιες της ενεργού διατομής μιας αντίδρασης (§1.1.1) και του ρυθμού αντίδρασης (§1.1.2), στη συνέχεια γίνεται αναφορά στα φαινόμενα σήραγγος (§1.1.3) και screening (§1.1.4), καθώς και στην έννοια του παραθύρου Gamow (§1.1.5). Στην παράγραφο §1.1.6 περιγράφονται οι διάφορες διεργασίες που λαμβάνουν χώρα στο εσωτερικό των αστέρων και που είναι υπεύθυνες για τη δημιουργία των στοιχείων που παρατηρούνται στο σύμπαν. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίνεται στην πυρηνοσύνθεση πάνω από το σίδηρο (§1.1.7), εστιάζοντας κυρίως στη διεργασία ρ και τους ρ πυρήνες (§1.1.8). Τα στοιχεία αστρικής πυρηνοσύνθεσης ολοκληρώνονται με την παράγραφο §1.1.9 όπου γίνεται αναφορά στο πρόβλημα των περιεκτικοτήτων των p πυρήνων. Στο δεύτερο μέρος του θεωρητικού υποβάθρου παρουσιάζονται αρχικά οι διάφοροι τύποι πυρηνικών αντιδράσεων (§1.2.1) με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στο μηχανισμό σύνθετου πυρήνα (§1.2.2) που σχετίζεται με τις αντιδράσεις της διδακτορικής αυτής διατριβής. Για τον υπολογισμό των ενεργών διατομών των αντιδράσεων αυτών χρησιμοποιείται η θεωρία Hauser- Feshbach, ο φορμαλισμός της οποίας παρουσιάζεται στην §1.2.3. Το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο της διατριβής περιλαμβάνει την περιγραφή των διαφόρων πειραματικών μεθόδων που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν. Σε μετρήσεις ενεργών διατομών είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική η κατασκευή κατάλληλων στόχων και η ανάλυση τους. Για το λόγο αυτό παρουσιάζονται στην §2.1.1 τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά που πρέπει να έχει ένας στόχος ώστε να είναι κατάλληλος για μετρήσεις ενεργών διατομών. Μέρος των στόχων που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν παρασκευάστηκαν στον εξαχνωτήρα του Ινστιτούτου Πυρηνικής Φυσικής (ΙΠΦ) ο οποίος περιγράφεται στην §2.1.2. Ακολουθεί η περιγραφή των τριών μεθόδων ανάλυσης των στόχων: α) Μέθοδος φθορισμού ακτινών X - XRF (§2.1.3), β) Μέθοδος οπισθοσκέδασης Rutherford - RBS (§2.1.4) και γ) Μέθοδος ανάλυσης πυρηνικών αντιδράσεων - NRA(§2.1.5). Στη συνέχεια γίνεται περιγραφή των τριών μεθόδων που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για τη μέτρηση ενεργών διατομών: α) η μέθοδος της ενεργοποίησης (§2.2.1), β) η μέθοδος των γωνιακών κατανομών (§2.2.2) και γ) η μέθοδος γωνιακής ολοκλήρωσης (§2.2.3). Οι μετρήσεις της διατριβής πραγματοποιήθηκαν σε τρία διαφορετικά εργαστήρια με χρήση διαφορετικών επιταχυντικών και ανιχνευτικών διατάξεων. Στις μετρήσεις στο ΙΠΦ χρησιμοποιήθηκε ο επιταχυντής Van de-Graaf Tandem που παρουσιάζεται στην §2.3.1 ενώ η αντίστοιχη ανιχνευτική διάταξη ενεργοποίησης περιγράφεται στην §2.3.2. Σύντομη περιγραφή του επιταχυντή Dynamitron του IfS στη Στουτγάρδη γίνεται στην §2.4.1 ενώ στην §2.4.2 παρουσιάζεται η αντίστοιχη διάταξη των ανιχνευτών HPGe που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στις μετρήσεις γωνιακών κατανομών. Τέλος, περιγράφεται, επίσης σε συντομία, ο επιταχυντής Dynamitron Tandem του πανεπιστημίου του Bochum (§2.5.1) καθώς και ο ανιχνευτής NaI(Tl), γεωμετρίας 4π, που χρησιμοποιήθηκε στις γωνιακά ολοκληρωμένες μετρήσεις (§2.5.2). Το κεφάλαιο των μετρήσεων και της ανάλυσης έχει χωριστεί σε τρία τμήματα ανάλογα με την τεχνική που χρησιμοποιήθηκε για τη μέτρηση των ενεργών διατομών. Συγκεκριμένα, οι μετρήσεις με τη μέθοδο ενεργοποίησης περιγράφονται στην §3.1, οι μετρήσεις γωνιακών κατανομών στην §3.2 ενώ οι μετρήσεις γωνιακής ολοκλήρωσης στην §3.3. Σε κάθε τμήμα γίνεται μια γενική περιγραφή των μετρήσεων και της μεθόδου ανάλυσης όλων των αντιδράσεων και στη συνέχεια παρουσιάζονται οι επιμέρους λεπτομέρειες κάθε αντίδρασης ξεχωριστά. Το τέταρτο κεφάλαιο περιλαμβάνει την περιγραφή των θεωρητικών προτύπων που χρησιμοποιούνται στη διατριβή καθώς και τα τελικά αποτελέσματα. Στους σχετικούς υπολογισμούς της θεωρίας HF χρησιμοποιούνται θεωρητικά μοντέλα περιγραφής των διαφορών πυρηνικών παραμέτρων. Οι παράμετροι αυτές είναι α) πυκνότητες πυρηνικών καταστάσεων (§4.1.1), β) οπτικό δυναμικό πρωτονίου-πυρήνα (§4.1.2) και γ) οπτικό δυναμικό σωματιδίου-α-πυρήνα (§4.1.3). Στην §4.2 παρουσιάζονται τα τελικά πειραματικά αποτελέσματα της διατριβής και σύγκριση τους με τους θεωρητικούς υπολογισμούς. Πιο αναλυτικά, στην §4.2.1 παρουσιάζεται ο τρόπος υπολογισμού του αστροφυσικού παράγοντα, ενώ οι παράγραφοι §4.2.2 και §4.2.3 περιλαμβάνουν τις ενεργές διατομές και τους αστροφυσικούς παράγοντες των αντιδράσεων (p, γ) και (α, γ), αντίστοιχα. Η διατριβή ολοκληρώνεται με τα τελικά συμπεράσματα
