In previous decades, the conventional CMOS technology with the support of lithography succeeded to reduce the size of the basic structural element of any integrated circuits. However, this technology is reaching the CMOS fundamental limits, such as the thickness of the gate oxides of a transistor, the appearance of short channel effects, the doping fluctuations as well as the increasing difficulty and cost of nano-scale lithography.
