Malassezia pachydermatis wchodzi w skład fizjologicznej bioty skóry i błon śluzowych większości ssaków i ptaków. Jako oportunista powoduje głównie powierzchniowe zakażenia skóry. Obecnie znaczenia nabiera pytanie, czy patogenność M. pachydermatis uwarunkowana jest wyłącznie czynnikami zależnymi od gospodarza, czy też pewne szczepy posiadają niezależne mechanizmy wirulencji, a inne czynniki jedynie wyzwalają ich ekspresję. W swojej pracy postawiłam następującą hipotezę: ‘Występowanie cech różniących izolaty M. pachydermatis pochodzące od zdrowych lub chorych zwierząt wskazuje na istnienie typowo komensalnych, jak i potencjalnie patogennych szczepów w obrębie gatunku’.
