In somatosensory perception the neurons of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) are the first responders to the different types of stimuli applied on the skin, and a specific type of stimulus also activates a specific subtype of sensory afferents. Genetic labelling of DRG cell subtypes allows their identification in vivo and in vitro providing a unique opportunity to study the physiology of these cells and could give insights into what makes them modality specific.
