Solo Exhibition:Galerie Fons Welters, Playstation, Amsterdam

Exhibition dates: 11 January - 15 February 2003Playstation is very proud to kick-off 2003 with an exhibition by Scott Myles (Dundee, 1975). The exhibition marks the end of a one-year Scottish Arts Council Residency in which the artist has been living and working in Amsterdam. Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Myles has had solo exhibitions at Tramway and The Modern Institute in Glasgow, among others, and has taken part in various international group shows.The exhibition in Playstation is Myles's first solo exhibition in Holland. Although his work has a strong conceptual side, it is formally and thematically too diverse (and too 'visual', perhaps) to be classified under this label. In his presentation in Playstation, Myles shows an emphatically sculptural approach, and makes physicality as much a subject as referentiality. The installation 'Vulture', for example (consisting of three tailor mannequins, standing passively before a poster, like surrogate viewers), uses references to art history and conceptualism (the poster is a representation of a work by British artist-theorist Victor Burgin) - but at the same time, as the mannequins are re-covered with fabric similar in tone to military and work wear uniforms adopted by 'trendies' around the world, it comments on the state of art itself, and its audience. Myles's fascination with popular culture, the beautiful, and the glamorous, present in this work, also plays an important role in the other works in the exhibition. 'Yes', for example, is an elegantly light, minimalist sculpture, in which the artist created a triangle by positioning a solid gold chain in one of the corners of the gallery. 'Untitled (bass)' is a kit bass guitar, assembled and customised, leaning against an amplifier and speaker in the exhibition space - cool and passive, celebrating the formal qualities of an everyday pop-cultural object, but all the more so appealing to the seductive, exciting, and sexy associations they produce.
