The De Vries theory explains the selective reflection of light by cholesteric preparations without the concept of Grandjean « planes ». The existence of planes perpendicular to the optic axis has never been proved and this hypothesis seems now to have no real justification. If one assumes that, in a preparation of variable thickness, the boundaries conditions give rise to disturbances in the twisted structure, one must imagine the presence of discontinuity surfaces parallel to the optic axis. Such discontinuities or « cloisons de Grandjean » entirely explain the already observed phenomena.
