The Mauguin-de Vries theory expresses the specific rotatory power of a homogeneous cholesteric preparation, considered as a helicoidal succession of birefringent layers, as a function of the indices of the layers and of the pitch of the screw-like structure. The theory has never been quantitavely verified. It is possible to determine the value of the pitch by measuring the distance between the Grandjean « planes » ; it is more difficult to determine the values of the indices.
