Since the 1990s, research in Human Resource Management (HRM) has been largely concerned with the search for links between HR 'systems' and firm performance (Guest, 1997). This has given rise to a body of literature that has been labeled 'high performance' and 'high commitment1 management. Despite references to the term commitment within this literature, little research has examined the relationship between these HR systems and employee commitment. This is despite claims that commitment is best viewed as a multidimensional construct, with different outcomes for both individuals and for organisations pursuing high commitment strategies.
