The myth of the lingua franca in science : objectivising an ideology

This article discusses the transformation of English into the lingua franca of science, in an attempt to understand why a common language has come to hold such sway. The central idea is that what is at issue is an ideology, perhaps even a mythology, an ancient scientific utopia, a way of masking – through objectivation – the language of power and the power of the dominant language.Ce texte discute la transformation de l’anglais en langue franche de la science. L’enjeu est de voir ce que signifiait cet envoûtement par une langue commune.
