Translating narrative and stylistic empathy in Carson McCullers's <i>The Member of the Wedding</i>

This dissertation aims at studying the two French translations of Carson McCullers’s 1946 novel The Member of the Wedding, and additionally offers a more recent and personal vision of this novel with the translation of an excerpt from the novel. The present translation study was completed with a stylistic approach of the novel and of the official translations, thus taking into account the narrative devices, the grammar and the literary style of the novel. The main objective of this dissertation is to prove that themes like the main character’s loneliness, physical difference and potential sexual ambiguity (the main character is Frankie Addams, a pre-adolescent girl from the South of the United-States) were not only quite ahead of the novel’s time of publication, but they are especially present in the author’s writing style and thus introduce important challenges for the French translation. Indeed a good translation would have to consider the stylistic and narrative nuances of the present novel in order to account for the intrinsically “queer” atmosphere of the novel at best.Ce mémoire propose d’étudier les deux traductions officielles du roman de Carson McCullers The Member of the Wedding (Frankie Addams), publié en 1946, ainsi que d’offrir une nouvelle proposition personnelle de traduction sur un court passage du roman. Cette étude de traductologie est notamment enrichie par une analyse stylistique du roman et des traductions prenant en compte les procédés narratologiques, la grammaire, ou encore les figures de style. L’objectif de ce mémoire est de prouver que les thèmes comme la solitude, la différence et la potentielle ambiguïté sexuelle propres au personnage principal (une pré-adolescente vivant dans le Sud des États-Unis, Frankie Addams) sont non seulement présents et avant-gardistes au moment de la publication, mais peuvent aussi et surtout se retrouver dans l’écriture et le style de l’auteure, et ainsi poser des défis de traduction. Une bonne traduction, dans le cas de ce roman, devrait prendre en compte les nuances de style et de narration afin de rendre correctement l’atmosphère essentiellement « queer » du roman
