Limits and complications related to autologous bone grafts lead the searchers to improve new bone substitutes, mainly based on xenogenic or allogenic biomaterial. Novel technologies allow the preservation of the organic fraction of some xenogenic bone substitutes, particularly type I collagen, while eliminating its antigenic potential. The biologic properties of this protein improve graft osseointegration. Histological observations of the newly formed bone and clinical results obtained in comparison with collagen free bone substitutes have demonstrated excellent results.
