International audience[The term city is a double paradox. On the one hand, the feeling that a lived or traveled space is a city is easy to feel. On the other hand, defining this feeling is difficult. On the other hand, the word city is very often used to cover different geographical perimeters: commune, agglomeration, metropolis. In other words, the feeling of being in a city is quite precise, but the use of the word is geographically rather imprecise. To remove these paradoxes and better understand what the city is, we must first examine the general definitions of the word city, then analyze the contributions of administrative geography and quantitative geography.]Le terme de ville relève d’un double paradoxe. D’une part, le sentiment qu’un espace vécu ou parcouru est une ville est aisé à ressentir. En revanche, définir ce sen-timent est difficile. D’autre part, le mot ville est très souvent usité pour recouvrir des périmètres géographiques différents : commune, agglomération, métropole. Autre-ment dit, le sentiment d’être dans une ville est assez précis, mais l’usage du mot est géographiquement assez imprécis.
