International audience[To analyze the system of cities in a territory is to focus on the importance of the container, in this case the cities, and the way in which this container is structured, in other words the urban framework. Such an analysis can be based on a multiscale approach to cities, depending on whether one considers the municipal scale, that of the urban unit or that of the urban area. The study of these three scales highlights similarities, but also differences. The main resemblance will justify a more specific examination of the primatial city in France, Paris. Finally, the system of cities can be considered no longer at the national level, but that of the regions, which will highlight strong contrasts.]Analyser le système des villes sur un territoire, c’est s’attacher à l’importance du contenant, en l’espèce les villes, et à la façon dont se structure ce contenant, autre-ment dit l’armature urbaine. Une telle analyse peut relever d’une approche multisca-laire des villes, selon que l’on considère l’échelle communale, celle de l’unité urbaine ou celle de l’aire urbaine.
