The Variability of Analytical Indicators in Ivy Leaves (Hedera Helix L.) and Medical Products with Ivy Extracts

The aim of the research: To evaluate the variability of analytical indicators in medical products with ivy extracts and in ivy leaves collected from different places in Lithuania by Spectrophotometric and Pharmacopoeial Chromatographic Methods. The objectives of the research: To determine the total content of phenolic compounds and saponins and their variability in ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.) collected in different places of Lithuania; To measure the antioxidant activity of ivy leaves; To determine the quality of saponins in ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.) and medical products with ivy extract by TLC and HPLC methods. The object of the research: Ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.) collected in different places of Lithuania (n=9) and medical products with ivy extract purchased in pharmacies (n=6). The methods of the research: The total content of phenolic compounds has been evaluated by Folin-Ciocalteu method and calculated by gallic acid equivalent. The total content of saponins have been evaluated using spectrophotometer with anisaldehyde reagent and calculated by saponins linear regression equation of the calibration curve. The antioxidant activity has been measured with CUPRAC assay using spectrophotometer. The Quality of saponins have been determined using pharmacopoeial TLC and HPLC methods. Results and conclusions: The total content of phenolic compounds and saponins collected in Lithuania were different. Maximum content of phenolic compounds was determined in Šilutė city (1,889 g/ml) and the minimum was in Pumpėnai area (1,095 g/ml). Maximum content of saponins were determined in Palanga (0,731 g/ml) and the minimum were identificated in Šilute city (0,296 g/ml). Moreover, in this research was measured antioxidant activity of ivy leaves. Maximum antioxidantical activity show off leaves from Šilutė city (4,289 mg/g) and the minimum activity were in leaves from Pumpėnai area (2,440 mg/g). Analizing with TLC and HPLC methods relative standard deviation of active substance means did not exceed the limit which is 5 percent.
