During the Louis Philippe period, under the influence of Romantism, eclectism was the norm : Italian majolica of the Renaissance and French earthenware from the 17th and 18th centuries were all copied and interpreted. Exotic patterns were ever-increasing in number. Initially, the designs used had featured approximate replications of Oriental works, later happily giving way to something more in keeping with the spirit in which Western artists worked. Nature was always a favourite subject for the earthenware artists, and according to the period the representations of plants were marked by Romanticism, Japanism or Art nouveau. Earthenware also met a growing public demand for imagery : hundreds of series were produced with highly varied themes including the history of France, topical subjects, picturesque illustrations, or humorous scenes. Plaire au public demeurait un point fort, et toute la création se mettait à l'écoute des caprices de la clientèle. Cette démarche conduisit à la réalisation d'objets dont les qualités esthétiques étaient très contestables. Souvent, la qualité technique de l'exécution compensait la faiblesse de la création. L'entreprise tente de réagir contre la médiocrité et la monotonie de l'édition en grande quantité en multipliant les décors et les formes, élargissant ainsi les propositions de son catalogue. Le grand choix permettait au client d'avoir l'illusion de l'unique. Tout au cours du XIXème siècle le style des objets produits subit les fluctuations du goût. L'histoire constitua une source d'inspiration. Durant l'Empire et la Restauration, les réalisations sont néoclassiques : leurs modèles sont anglais. A l'époque Louis Philippe, sous l'influence du Romantisme, l'éclectisme s'imposa : la majolique italienne de la Renaissance, les faïences françaises des XVII et XVIIIème siècle furent copiées ou interprétées. Les motifs inspirés de l'exotisme devinrent de plus en plus nombreux. Dans un premier temps, la création transposa d'une façon approximative les oeuvres orientales, puis elle assimila avec plus de bonheur l'esprit dans lequel les artistes orientaux travaillaient. La nature constitua très tôt un sujet de prédilection pour les artistes de la faïencerie, selon les périodes les représentations de la plante sont marquées par le Romantisme, le Japonisme ou l'Art nouveau. La faïence répondit aussi à la demande dévorante du public pour l'image : des centaines de séries furent éditées sur des thématiques très variées : histoire de la France, sujets d'actualité, illustrations pitoresques, scènes humoristiques.
