UNE TRADUCTION INCONNUE DES DISTICHA CATONIS EN HÉBREU

International audienceThe Disticha Catonis (3rd cent. C. E.) are one of the most popular collections of moral sentences in the medieval Latin world. Its Hebrew translation which, so far as I know, has never been studied has been preserved in the unique MS. Moscow, Russian State Library, Günzburg 280, copied by a Spanish hand of the 15th century. By closely comparing the Latin and Hebrew versions with the known versions in Romance languages, we observe that the Hebrew as well as two Catalan translations stand very close to the Latin orginal. Nevertheless, the Hebrew text being the closest one, we have to consider it, in the present state of our knowledge of the vernacular translations, as directly translated from the Latin. Its phraseology shows that the translator tried to give it a biblical as well as rabbinic flavour, that he was not conversant with philosophical terminology and that he read the Disticha as providing very basic instructions; this implies that he could hardly have been one of the known Jewish thinkers who dealt with Latin scholastic philosophy during the 15th century and that the intention and audience aimed at by his (rather unnoticed) attempt are still partially unclear. The Hebrew text is edited together with the standard Latin version and explanatory notes.L’un des recueils latins de sentences morales les plus célèbres du Moyen Âge, les Disticha Catonis (IIIe s.), a fait l’objet d’une traduction en hébreu inconnue à ce jour, conservée dans le ms. unique Moscou, Bibliothèque d’État de Russie, Günzburg 280. Ce manuscrit a été copié par une main espagnole au XVe s. Une comparaison détaillée entre le latin, l’hébreu et les traductions connues en langues romanes permet de retenir, comme les plus proches du texte latin, l’hébreu et deux traductions catalanes. Toutefois, l’hébreu est dans le rapport le plus étroit avec le latin, de telle sorte qu’il faut le considérer, en l’état de notre connaissance des textes vernaculaires, comme directement traduit du latin. L’étude des caractéristiques de la traduction révèle une tentative d’acculturation par l’usage d’une phraséologie biblique ou rabbinique, et un manque de familiarité avec le vocabulaire philosophique et une tendance à une lecture très prosaïque des enseignements du texte, ce qui conduit à éliminer de la liste des traducteurs possibles ceux qui étaient alors notoirement familiers de la philosophie latine et à s’interroger sur la fonction et le public assignés à cette traduction, qui ne paraît pas avoir remporté un grand succès.
