International audienceThe Disticha Catonis (3rd cent. C. E.) are one of the most popular collections of moral sentences in the medieval Latin world. Its Hebrew translation which, so far as I know, has never been studied has been preserved in the unique MS. Moscow, Russian State Library, Günzburg 280, copied by a Spanish hand of the 15th century. By closely comparing the Latin and Hebrew versions with the known versions in Romance languages, we observe that the Hebrew as well as two Catalan translations stand very close to the Latin orginal. Nevertheless, the Hebrew text being the closest one, we have to consider it, in the present state of our knowledge of the vernacular translations, as directly translated from the Latin.
