Urban Development in Bavay in the Light of Recent Research. The traditional idea one has about urban development in Bavay is that of a two-tier growth, materialized by two different road networks, the older surrounding the forum, in the west, the earlier representing a more recent extension towards the east. Now, a re-examination of the data on which this assumption rested, together with recent discoveries, leads us to abandon this pattern of evolution and to propose a new approach. From the very time of its creation, during the last two decades B.C., the antique city was endowed with the regular network hitherto thought to be the more recent. From the middle of the first century A.D., it experienced a slight alteration in the organization of its initial network because of the implantation of the forum. The foundation work of the times, essentially determined by topographical constraints, could not find its proper place within the original network ; in thus determined new orientation which in turn led to the opening of new roads and the redesign of the areas bordering the monumental complex.L'idée traditionnelle qu'on se fait du développement urbain à Bavay est celle d'une croissance en deux étapes, matérialisées par deux trames de voies différentes, la plus ancienne entourant le forum, à l'ouest, la seconde, représentant une extension plus récente vers l'est. Or le réexamen des données sur lesquelles se fondait cette hypothèse ainsi que des découvertes récentes conduisent à abandonner ce schéma d'évolution et à proposer un nouveau modèle. Dès sa création, dans les deux dernières décennies av. J.-C, la ville antique a été dotée du réseau régulier dont on pensait jusqu'alors qu'il était le plus récent. A partir du milieu du Ier s. ap. J.-C, elle a vu l'organisation de sa trame initiale partiellement modifiée par l'implantation du forum. L'assiette du monument, déterminée essentiellement par des contraintes topographiques, n'a pas pu prendre place parfaitement dans le réseau originel : elle a déterminé des orientations originales qui ont entraîné le percement de nouvelles rues et le réaménagement des quartiers bordant le complexe monumental.De stadsontwikkeling van Bavay in het recent onderzoek. Tradioneel neemt men aan dat de ontwikkeling van Bavay een groei in twee stadia was, met twee verschillende stratenpatronen ; het oudste rond het forum in het westen, het nieuwste als een uitbreiding naar het oosten. Een nieuw onderzoek van de gegevens waarop deze théorie steunde en récente ontdekkingen voeren naar een ander model. Van zijn stichting in de laatste twee decennia voor Chr. af had de stad het regelmatige stratenpatroon waarvan men vroeger dacht dat het het nieuwste was. In het midden van de eerste eeuw na Chr. werd dit plan gedeeltelijk verstoord door de inplanting van het forum. De topografische gegevens lieten niet toe dit monumentale bouwwerk perfekt in het oorspronkelijke plan in te passen ; zo was het nodig nieuwe straten aan te leggen en de wijken naast het forum aan te passen.Thollard Patrick.
