Bavay used to be a medium-sized city, spreading over a relatively small area and possessing neither bel- frey nor town hall, and it radiated over its surrounding flat lands. Indeed it was a fortified city, with a ditch and walls opening in three locations on the seven main military roads of Gallo-Roman origin. The fortress, situated at the west of the city on the location of the ancient Forum included a dungeon. Bavay was also a market city. A main street, the «Franche Rue», which cut all through the intra-muros space from east to west, was reserved for the bourgeois who only had the right to open a shop there.
