The present paper is based on two local studies concerning Geneva. An attempt is made to measure the progress of birth control, underlining urban/rural differences in fertility regulation strategies, then the appearance of birth control in Geneva is shown to have been concomitant with a rise in fertility, the characteris tics of which are specified. The resulte throw new light on "natural" fertility and lead to an important conclusion : that in a population which does not practise birth control, a form of regulation can nonetheless exist and be effective for controlling fertility.
