Early modem French culture expressed an extreme antipathy toward the aged, particularly toward their guarding of property but even toward their very survival. Sermonizers reviled property as a vain obstacle to passage to the next world, doctors explained vanity as the disease of the aged, and playwrights offered ugly old characters refusing to die or to relinquish their hold on the patrimony. But in the eighteenth century a major cultural change occurred. The plight of the aged came to be viewed with considerable compassion, the economic interest of the aged came to be recognized, and new means of support were suggested.
