The tragic story of Abradates and Panthea, recounted by Xenophon in the form of a novel in episodes, in books V, VI and VII of the Cyropaedia, could be considered to be a precursor to the Greek novel, as already there are a number of elements present which will become characteristic of this literary genre (couple separated by fate, presence of rivals, infallible fidelity of the protagonists): Xenophon wished to make the novelistic interlude devoted to Abradates and Panthea a sequence both poignant and exemplary – an occasion to meditate on the power of love and the relation of this emotion to vice and virtue.
