In songs 15 and 16 of the Dionysiaca, Nonnos of Panopolis recounts the unhappy love of the herdsman Hymnos for the nymph Nicaia. Although the poet uses certain topoi from Greek novels, he twists the narrative outline by the splitting of the hero and the distortion of stereotypes.
