L'affaire Duong Chakr

In June 1893, Prince Duong Chakr, Cambodian king Norodom's son, arrived in France coming from Siam. His statements to the newspapers kept an animated polemic alive. For some prince was the victim of the Chief Resident in Cambodia, de Vernéville, and a friend of France who refused to help Siam against her. For others his decisive role during the insurrection in 1885, then his attempt to kill his father led to doubt about the frankness of his refusal to cooperate with the Siamese. Notwithstanding this polemic, French Government agreed with the arguments of the General Governor of Indochina, de Lanessan, and the Chief Resident, de Verneville, who asserted to express Norodom's will. It offered to Duong Chakr to live in Algeria at France's expense. On his refusal, it deported him, at the end of 1893, to Djelfa, near the Saharian borders. The lonely and on probation prince died on March 25th 1897 through the united effects of boredom, climate and alcoholism. Was Duong Chakr really a victim or an intriguer ? A patriot or an ambitious person ? Educated as other Cambodian princes according to traditional customs, it seems that he was ready for anything in the hope of catching the crown.En juin 1893, arrivait en France, venant du Siam, le prince Duong Chakr, fils du roi du Cambodge, Norodom. Ses déclarations à la presse alimentèrent une vive polémique. Pour certains, le prince était une victime du résident supérieur au Cambodge, de Verneville, et, ami de la France, avait refusé d'aider le Siam contre elle. Pour d'autres, son rôle déterminant dans l'insurrection de 1885, puis sa tentative d'assassiner son père faisaient planer des doutes sur la sincérité de son refus de collaborer avec les Siamois. Ignorant cette polémique, le Gouvernement français suivait les arguments du gouverneur général de l'Indochine, de Lanessan, et du résident supérieur, de Vernéville, qui affirmaient exprimer la volonté de Norodom. Il offrit à Duong Chakr de vivre en Algérie aux frais de la France. Sur son refus, il l'expulsa, fin août 1893, à Djelfa, aux confins du Sahara. Le prince, isolé et surveillé, mourut le 25 mars 1897 sous l'effet conjugué de l'ennui, du climat et de l'alcoolisme. Duong Chakr était -il une victime ou un intrigant ? Un patriote ou un ambitieux ?
