During the first half of the nineteenth century, in France public opinion and rulers scarcely knew about the reality of Cambodia. In 1853 the Cambodian king Ang Duong tried unsuccessfully to enter into relations with Napoléon III. In 1856 the French diplomat, Charles de Montigny, wanted on his own initiative to arrange a trade treaty with that kingdom. He failed because of his blunders and the opposition of Siam. It was only in 1858 that some books gave a serious description of Cambodia.
