Ya Chao Tham, or Chao Thammatheva, was the son of the ninth king of Champasak, Chao Boua, and the grandson of the fourth king of Champasak, Chao Nou. He played an important role in shaping the political circumstances in the Laos-Cambodia border region for almost half a century, from the 1880s until his death in the early 1930s. Born to the Champasak royal family in present-day southern Laos, he travelled to the Sesan River Basin in present-day northeastern Cambodia in the 1880s, where he allegedly used his magical powers to suppress the highlanders who lived there and to establish Veun Say on behalf of Champasak and their Siamese mentors.
