The massive religious litterary production of the end of the roman period and the Early Middle Ages is rarely concerned with old people. For the ecclesiastical authors, the number of years of age is only of symbolic meaning, and they are unexpectedly severe towards old people, whose vices are still more unforgivable than yougn people's. They write pitiless portraits of them, insisting on physical decrepitude, which is considered as an excellent proof of the vanity of this life. In his ugliness, the old man is an image of sin, a fact which dœsn't bring him much sympathy.
