While under the Civil Code of Lower Canada private international law was quite limited in scope, upon reforming the Civil Code, which came into force on January 1, 2004, the Quebec legislator chose to codify this body of law within one complete Book of the code. Several of its new articles take their inspiration from texts of European origin. By focusing on the concept of freedom to contract, which allows parties to designate the system of law governing their covenant •an essential element in international commercial relations •the author has set in parallel the new rules and their sources.
