A missionary ethnography of the Sauvages : the first franciscan description of the Chiriguano people (1782). The Chiriguano, settled in south-eastern Bolivia, fought during four centuries against the european colonisation. In spite of an important historiography, composed of franciscan writings, they are still virtually unknown (by comparison with the Araucan or the Jivaro). Peling on an unpublished text, the author imputes this relative ignorance to the quasi-monopoly of the franciscan works which he considers to be mediocre in quality as well as equivocal.Thierry SAIGNES.
