Abstract The Tuaregs of northern Niger maintain that matrilateral cross-cousin marriages are preferential. This preference hardly seems to be an indicator of generalised exchange. Although informants say that this type of marriage best satisfies certain conditions of exteriority, other non-preferential marriages do this as well. So there must be other reasons for this preference. A closer examination of informants ' statements and the study of bridewealth circulation lead us to think that this marriage preference expresses the importance accorded to the brother-sister relationship.
