Birds from the Palaeolithic Rock Shelter of Ksar 'Akil, Lebanon

The number of bird remains recovered from the Mousterian to early Kebaran deposits of Ksar 'Akil is remarkably small. Apparently the inhabitants of the rock shelter practised bird exploitation casually, thereby focusing on a limited number of large and medium-sized species. A few remains of small passerine birds were retrieved from the Mousterian deposits. They were probably brought to the site by owls. The sample contains various bird species which are nowadays uncommon or very rare, either in the avifauna of the Levant or in the avifauna of the Lebanese area only. The birds reflect a landscape with forest, open woodland, open rocky country, grassland and standing or slow-flowing water surrounded by a more or less dense swampy/marshy vegetation. The presence of the last-mentioned humid habitat in Palaeolithic times is the most outstanding difference with respect to the present-day environment of the site, as it would be if it had not been completely modified by human interference.Le nombre d'ossements d'oiseaux, découverts dans les dépôts datant du Moustérien jusqu'au Kébarien ancien de l'abri sous roche de Ksar 'Akil, est remarquablement petit. Selon toute apparence, l'exploitation des oiseaux fut une affaire accidentelle pour les habitants de Ksar 'Akil qui ne se concentraient que sur un nombre restreint d'espèces de grande et moyenne taille. Quelques vestiges de passereaux de petite taille viennent des dépôts moustériens. Il est probable qu'ils ont été emportés jusqu'au site par des Strigiformes. L'échantillon contient des restes de plusieurs espèces d'oiseaux qui, à présent, sont peu nombreuses ou même très rares, soit dans l'avifaune du Levant soit dans l'avifaune du territoire libanais seulement. Les oiseaux renvoient l'image d'un paysage de forêt, de terrain légèrement boisé, de terrain rocheux ouvert, de prairie et d'eau stagnante ou ruisselante, entourée d'une végétation marécageuse plus ou moins abondante. La présence de ce dernier biotope humide dans le paléolithique constituerait la différence la plus remarquable avec l'environnement actuel de l'abri, s'il n'était pas transformé complètement par l'homme.Kersten Annemie M.P.
