The number of bird remains recovered from the Mousterian to early Kebaran deposits of Ksar 'Akil is remarkably small. Apparently the inhabitants of the rock shelter practised bird exploitation casually, thereby focusing on a limited number of large and medium-sized species. A few remains of small passerine birds were retrieved from the Mousterian deposits. They were probably brought to the site by owls. The sample contains various bird species which are nowadays uncommon or very rare, either in the avifauna of the Levant or in the avifauna of the Lebanese area only. The birds reflect a landscape with forest, open woodland, open rocky country, grassland and standing or slow-flowing water surrounded by a more or less dense swampy/marshy veget...
