Analysis of the faunal remains from the PPNB site of Ujrat el-Mehed (southern Sinai) provides evidence for the presence of a group of hunters-gatherers exploiting its surroundings knowledgeably. The rich faunal assemblage contains mammals, birds, reptiles and fishes, all wild species. No indications of domestication have been found. However, some selection in the hunting of ibex, the most abundantly found species, may have been practiced. Game birds (Alectoris chukar, Ammoperdix heyi, Coturnix coturnix) appear to have been hunted regularly. The existence of Bos primigenius and Gazella gazella, species which had expanded their distributional regime during the last glaciation, is indicative of a more mesic climate than reigns today in the re...
