Utterances and silences in the Athenian sphere. Silvia Montiglio. [23-41] This article aims at understanding the articulation betweeen speech and silence in the assembly of ancient Athens. The orator, concerned as he is with the rights and duties of intervening for the public good, as well as with the need to show his restraint, makes an abundant use of pretentions in order to suggest that he speeks only for the common interest, all the more that he often praises himself and insults his opponents. However, he must declare his intention to remain silent, because the sudden absence of words is interpreted as a sign of impotence.
