The Polish crisis: historical context and domestic dimension, by Wolfgang Wagner The rise and the defeat of Solidarity trade-union in Poland differs on essential points with the other liberation movements in the GFR in 1953, in Hungary in 1956 and Czekoslovakia in 1968. The specific situation in Poland (economic crisis, a deeply rooted national consciousness) but also the international context explain the reasons why on this occasion the Soviet Union preferred the "internal solution" instead of a direct military intervention in order to reestablish the power monopole of the Communist Party.
