Smith (Robert). — Patron, family and firm : Bouchayer et Viallet, in Grenoble (1847-1871) Family firms remain as essential to modem economics in the 20th century as they were in the 19th, although individual firms seldom survive the first or second generation. Nevertheless, their variety, ephemeral nature, and ties to families have made them an elusive subject for the historian despite their collective importance. This study of «Bouchayer et Viallet» of Grenoble, based on family papers as well as records of the entreprise, focuses on the founder and three eldest sons who succeeded him — four generations spanning more than a century. While economic conditions and the family's wealth and social status played their part in determining whether the patrons acquired an entrepreneurial or rentier mentality, a particularly important source of inspiration was the rapport between parents and their principal heirs. In examining such psychological terrain, the essay underscores a relationship between the private world of families and economic life.Les entreprises familiales restent aussi essentielles pour l'économie moderne du XXe siècle qu'elles l'étaient au XIXe, quoique les firmes individuelles ne survivent qu'exceptionnellement après la première ou la deuxième génération. Cependant, en raison de leur variété, de leur caractère éphémère, et de leurs rapports étroits avec les familles, les historiens les ont négligées malgré leur importance collective. Cette étude de «Bouchayer et Viallet», à Grenoble, basée sur des papiers familiaux aussi bien que sur les archives de l'entreprise, traite surtout du fondateur et trois fils aînés qui suivirent — quatre générations, sur une durée de plus d'un siècle. Quoique la conjoncture économique, le rang social et la richesse de la famille aient joué leur rôle pour donner aux patrons un comportement d'entrepreneur ou de rentier, une origine encore plus importante de leur attitude fut le rapport affectif entre les parents et leurs héritiers principaux.
