Nevertheless, their variety, ephemeral nature, and ties to families have made them an elusive subject for the historian despite their collective importance. This study of «Bouchayer et Viallet» of Grenoble, based on family papers as well as records of the entreprise, focuses on the founder and three eldest sons who succeeded him — four generations spanning more than a century.
