DNA immunization with distinct DTH-inducing salivary proteins modulates the course of infection with <i>L. major</i>.

<p>Mice immunized in the right ear with CTL DNA (•), PpSP15 (○), PpSP42 (□), PpSP44 (▪), SGH (▴) or pre-exposed to bites of uninfected sand flies (▾) were challenged in the left ear with 500 <i>L. major</i> metacyclics and 0.5 pairs of SGH. Due to the extensive ulceration of the ears in mice immunized with PpSP44, lesion size measurements could not be performed beyond seven weeks after challenge. The symbols represent the mean ± the SEM for ten mice per group. Asterisks indicate statistical significance (<i>p</i><0.05) compared to mice immunized with CTL DNA.
