The “Assiniboia” was built in 1907 by Fairfield Ship Building & Engineering Co., Ltd. of Govan, Scotland. After completion, the propeller vessel crossed the Atlantic under her own power. She was owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Co., Ltd. of Montreal, Ont., Canada, from 1907 until 1968. In 1968, ownership transferred to J.A.L. Steamship Lines, Ltd., composed of Don Lee of Port Lambton, Ont., Toni Carroll of New York, and Charles L. Fort of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In that same year, the Assiniboia Steamship Corp. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania took possession in hopes to convert the vessel into a floating restaurant.
