The “B.F. Berry” was built in 1908 by the American Ship Building Co., of Lorain, Ohio. The steel propeller vessel experienced numerous ownership and name changes. From 1908 until 1915, she was owned by the Fremont Steamship Co. (Herbert K. Oakes, Mgr.), of Detroit, Michigan. In 1915, ownership transferred to Franklin Steamship Co. (Herbert K. Oakes, Mgr.), of Cleveland, OH. They owned her until 1922, when she was sold to Matthews Steamship Co., Ltd., of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. While under their ownership, she was renamed “Berryton” and registered as Canadian vessel number 141676. Frederick C.
