We consider the difficulties that nonprofit organizations in a broader sense face in the labor market when they are not able to condition wages on performance. Agents in our model may be intrinsically mo-tivated for certain tasks or missions, but their motives do not neces-sarily coincide with the goals of the firm. Wages are an insufficient screening device, and we analyze alternative control mechanisms such as ex ante investigation of candidates and ex post auditing
