<p>Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904), Meiji dönemi Japonya’sını batı dünyasına tanıtan önemli aydınlar arasında yer alır. Hearn, gerçekleştirdikleri noktasında, Japonya’yı batıya tanıtan çağdaşı pek çok batılı aydından çoğunlukla farklı bir konumda ele alınır ve değerlendirilir.</p><p>Ondört yıl boyunca Japonya’da yaşayan Lafcadio Hearn, Japonya ve Japon kültürü üzerine çok sayıda eser kaleme almış ve bu eserler batıdaki Japonya bilgisinin oluşumuna büyük katkı sağlamıştır. Bu makalede, Lafcadio Hearn’ün yaşamı ve eserlerinden kesitler verilerek Japonya algısına ilişkin genel bir çerçeve çizilmeye çalışılacaktır.</p
