Under the reigns of François I and Henri II, at the threshold of the modern era, both society and government were undergoing fundamental changes : the fall of the feudal nobility and the ascent of the middle-class were changing the dynamics of the society. As a result, man’s identity, which until then had been based upon the feudal system, necessitated a new social interpretation. The quest for a new form of identity took place throughout the century, eventually resulting in the concept of the modern individual by the end of the century, which Montaigne’s idea of the self represents.
