Biofictions en langue française (1978-2017) : la Renaissance revisitée à travers ses marges

This thesis examines the reception of Renaissance historiography and its transformations through French biofictions that were published at the turn of the 21st century. The choice to study this body of works stems from an observation. The beginning of the 1980's was marked by two coinciding tendencies: namely, on the one hand, 1) an important increase in the number of historical fictions set in the 16th century, most of which feature little-known referential protagonists that correspond to one of these three marginal figures : the "inverted" artist, the heretical author or the poor devil ; and on the other hand, 2) the reconceptualisation of the notion of Renaissance emerging from a proliferation of studies focusing on marginal individuals in Renaissance historiography.My research aims at developing a better understanding of these two phenomena, based on an analysis that jointly examines the processes of marginalization of protagonists from my corpus, the narration of their biographical journeys and the conceptualization of the notion of Renaissance that arises from these texts. My study shows that the processes of marginalization of referential figures vary according to their gender. While the marginalization of male characters induces in the latter an increased feeling of individuality, female characters tend to be marginalized from the text itself, where they serve to showcase their male counterparts.If it is true that the Renaissance period represents an important cultural reference through which Western societies try to understand what characterizes them in the contemporary world, I believe that this "androcentric", or strongly masculine, reinterpretation of the 16th century bears witness to the difficulty of conceiving female agentivity in the contemporary world.La présente étude a pour objectif d'examiner la réception de l'historiographie renaissante et ses mutations à travers les biofictions en langue française du tournant du XXIe siècle. Ce choix relève d'un constat, soit celui d'une coïncidence, au début des années quatre-vingt, entre d'une part : 1) la multiplication de fictions historiques situées au XVIe siècle, dont la plupart mettent en scène des personnages référentiels peu connus de la Renaissance européenne qui correspondent à l'une de ces trois figures marginales, soit l'artiste « inverti », le lettré hérétique ou le pauvre diable ; et d'autre part : 2) la reconceptualisation de la notion de Renaissance qui émerge d'une multiplication de travaux portant sur des individus marginaux de l'historiographie renaissante.Mes recherches visent à développer une meilleure compréhension de ces deux phénomènes à partir d'une analyse qui lie les modalités de mise en marge des protagonistes de mon corpus, la mise en récit de leur parcours biographique et la conceptualisation de la notion de Renaissance qui se dégage de ces textes. Mon analyse démontre que les procédés de mise en marge des personnages référentiels diffèrent en fonction de leur sexe. Tandis que la marginalisation des personnages masculins produit chez ces derniers un sentiment accru de leur individualité, les personnages féminins tendent à être relégués dans les marges du texte lui-même, où elles servent à mettre en valeur des protagonistes masculins. S'il est vrai que la période renaissante constitue une référence culturelle importante par le biais de laquelle les sociétés occidentales tentent de comprendre ce qui les caractérise à l'époque contemporaine, je crois que cette relecture « androcentrique », ou fortement masculine, du XVIe siècle témoigne d'une certaine difficulté à concevoir l'agentivité féminine à l'époque contemporaine
