Indigenous identities and political activism in Brazil : after the Constitution of 1988

Este trabalho examina algumas questões sobre a especificidade dos processos de reconfiguração étnica e ativismo político indígena no Brasil a partir da Constituição Federal do Brasil de 1988, tomando três exemplos de reconfiguração étnica: os Waimiri-Atroari (Ki?in`ja) (AM/RR); os Makuxi e Wapichana na fronteira internacional entre a Guiana e o Brasil (RR); e os Tremembé (CE). Uma breve reflexão sobre as situações de contato interétnico em que se encontram estes povos e as maneiras de se (re-)identificar como “índios”, ou de reconfigurar suas identidades étnicas perante o Estado, revela a imensa diversidade de situações.This article examines some questions about the specificity of processes of ethnic reconfiguration and indigenous political activism in Brazil after the Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988, taking three examples of ethnic reconfiguration: the Waimiri- Atroari (Ki?in`ja) in Amazonas and Roraima states; the Macushi and Wapishana on the international border between Guyana and Brazil (Roraima state); and the Tremembé in Ceará state. A brief reflection about the situations of interethnic contact and the ways of (re-)identifying as “Indians”, or of reconfiguring their ethnic identities in relation to the State, reveals the immense diversity of situations
