Ecophobia? : Young peoples emotions and copingstrategies towards climate change

The term ecophobia derives from the negative emotions people feel towards problems related to climate change. To young Swedish people, age 16–25 is climate change currently the most important social issue. Several studies have been conducted to examine emotions related to climate change, though only a few exist that focuses on how young people cope with such emotions. Since coping strategies might suggest to be the decisive factor on how well young people handle stressful events connected to climate change is this partly the focus of this study. Because climate change is not something that is to be handled in a private sphere it is also important to investigate how young people discuss coping strategies in groups. The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate young people’s emotional approach to climate change. The study is based upon two focus group interviews with 12 people in each group. The participants were 15–16 years old. Using a thematic analysis of the material conducted the participants showed examples of positive, negative and neutral emotions followed by several different coping strategies. Using individual handling, collective direct- and indirect handling showed problem focused coping. Emotion focused coping was expressed by egocentric thinking, distancing and by defusing the problem meanwhile meaning-focused coping was shown by trust to, foremost, politicians. The participants pointed out the negative effect an actor with a lot of power in the climate change arena, such as president Donald Trump, who appears to be a climate skeptic. The participants in this study showed a variety of emotions related to climate change. Based upon what strategies they were using to cope with these emotions also showed to what extent they were willing to act in favor for the climate.Klimatångest är en term som har kommit ur de negativa känslor som människor känner gentemot de stora problemen som målas upp förknippade med ett klimat i förändring. Hos svenska ungdomar i åldern 16–25 är klimatproblematiken den absolut viktigaste samhällsfrågan i dagsläget. Studier har genomförts för att undersöka känslor relaterade till klimatfrågan, men endast ett fåtal har fokuserat på hur ungdomar hanterar dessa känslor. Eftersom copingstrategier kan visa sig vara avgörande för hur väl ungdomar tar sig igenom stressfyllda moment kopplade till klimatförändringar är detta delvis det fokus som ligger till grund för denna studie. Samtidigt är klimatfrågan något som inte hanteras i en privat sfär. Därför anses det också viktigt att inkludera hur ungdomarna diskuterar de copingstrategier de ger uttryck för i grupp. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka ungdomars känslomässiga förhållande till klimatförändringar. Studien är baserad på två fokusgrupper med 12 personer i varje grupp och deltagarna var 15–16 år. Utifrån appraisalteorin och tidigare copingstrategier har ett analysverktyg utformats för att identifiera uttryck av strategier. Utifrån innehållsanalys av intervjumaterialet kunde det konstateras att deltagarna gav uttryck för både negativa, positiva och neutrala förhållningssätt samt många olika copingstrategier. Ungdomarna visade problemfokuserad coping i form av individuell handling samt kollektiv direkt och indirekt handling. Känslofokuserad coping uttryckes genom egocentriskt tänkande, distansering samt avdramatisering av problemet. De visade också meningsfokuserad coping i form av tillit, främst till politiker, samtidigt som de såg en stor negativ effekt av president Donald Trumps klimatskepticism. Ungdomarna gav uttryck för varierande klimatrelaterade känslor, och beroende på vilka copingstrategier som används varierar också det egna engagemanget för klimatfrågan
